OLD TOWN KOTOR
The first look of every visitor to Kotor will be kept on his ramparts, a unique example of fortification architecture in Europe. The entire hill, St. Ivan 260m, at which foothill you can see the city, is surrounded by ramparts up to 20 meters high, about 10 meters wide and about 5 kilometers long. Ramparts are extended to the sea, they were built for almost 10 centuries, until the end of the XIX century.
ENTRANCE TO THE OLD CITY
You can enter the city through the three gates. The main city gate on the coast was built in 1555, in the Renaissance style. The northern gate with a chain bridge over the river Škurde was built in 1540 in memory of the failed attack by pirate HajredinBarbarosa. The south gate has three sectors of the gates from the period from the 14th to the 18th centuries.
Through the main gate on the shore you can enter the architectural most beautiful shaped and largest square - the "Square of Weapons", where is also a Baroque clock tower from the XVII century, built on the site of a medieval tower with a stone pyramid that traditionally served as a pillar of shame.
On the neighboring square there is one of the most beautiful and most important monuments of Romanesque architecture, the Cathedral of St. Tripun. The church has precious art objects, works of Kotor artists and goldsmiths.
The Maritime Museum, located in the baroque palace of Grgurin, provides a suggestive visual presentation of the development of seafaring in BokaKotorska and the Montenegrin coast. It contains old sailboats, weapons, and costumes, which faithfully exemplifies the former size and marvel of maritime in this region.
