If we tell you that only some of the visitors to this beautiful island are: Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Claudia Schiffer, Helmut Schmidt, Ronaldinho, Willy Brandt, Dan Bilzerian, are you interested? Or, if we say that, from all the places in the world, Novak Djokovic decided to marry his girlfriend Jelena right here. Or if you know that the famous chess match between Fischer and Spasco was played on this island in 1992. "It's like I came back to the city from the most beautiful fairy tale of my childhood," said the famous Italian actress Sophia Loren about Sveti Stefan. Sveti Stefan is a special place, not only for Montenegro, but for the entire Mediterranean. It is a unique combination of tradition and luxury.
Historically, due to its attractive position, it was first used as a shelter and fortress during the Turks, and then as a market and maritime center of the Venetian Republic. At the end of the nineteenth century it lost its commercial function, the fishing population was moving away, and finally in 1955, the island was completely evicted and adapted to an unusual city-hotel. Sveti Stefan has retained the original medieval look, while the interior of the house and villa is decorated according to world high class standards. Sveti Stefan's beaches are among the most beautiful in Europe, and the park forest in Milocer consists of conifers and exotic tree species.
There are three smaller churches on Sveti Stefan: the church of Sveti Stefan, after which the island was named, and it is located on the most prestigious part of the peninsula; the church of Alexander Nevsky, and the smallest, dedicated to the Transfiguration, is located at the very entrance to the town, which is connected with the mainland by a narrow embankment. The coastal part of Sveti Stefan is situated on a hill, where villas, hotels and apartments are available for tourists, and from them you can take narrow stone alleys to the sea. Also, the area of Sveti Stefan is very interesting for those who like hiking, and you can always make a break in one of the monasteries nearby.
